Baldassare Galuppi

1706 – 1785 · Italian

Biography

Baldassare Galuppi was born on 18 October 1706 on the lagoon island of Burano near Venice, which earned him his enduring nickname "il Buranello". After early lessons from his musician father and further training under Antonio Lotti, he built a career as an opera composer in Venice, interrupted by two years as a harpsichordist at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence. From 1741 to 1743 he directed the Italian opera at the King's Theatre in London. From 1749 his partnership with the playwright Carlo Goldoni made him one of the defining composers of opera buffa, while from 1762 he also served as maestro di cappella at St Mark's in Venice. Between 1765 and 1768 he worked as court composer to Catherine the Great in Saint Petersburg before returning to Venice, where he turned increasingly to church music. He died in Venice on 3 January 1785.
