Biography

Aram Khachaturian was born in 1903 in Tiflis (today Tbilisi) and grew up in a multi-ethnic environment that shaped his music for life. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and fused Armenian, Georgian, and Azerbaijani folk melodies with the tradition of Russian symphonic music. His ballet Gayane contains the world-famous Sabre Dance, one of the most performed orchestral pieces ever. With Spartacus he created in 1956 a monumental ballet whose Adagio became an emblem of Romantic ballet music. Khachaturian was considered the national composer of Armenia in the Soviet Union and was widely awarded, but also came into temporary conflict with Stalinist cultural policy in 1948. His work encompasses symphonies, concertos, and film music of unmistakable rhythmic energy. He died in 1978 in Moscow.
