Ángel de Saavedra

1791 – 1865 · Spanish

Biography

Ángel de Saavedra was born on 10 March 1791 in Córdoba and died on 22 June 1865 in Madrid. He fought against Napoleon's troops during the War of Independence and, in 1820, was sentenced to death for his liberal views; he went into exile in Gibraltar, London, Malta and finally France. Following the amnesty he returned to Spain in 1834, and on his brother's death he inherited the title Duke of Rivas. The following year the premiere of his drama "Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino" brought the breakthrough of Romanticism to the Spanish stage. Saavedra later held high office, serving as mayor of Madrid, an ambassador, prime minister for two days in 1854, and president of the Spanish Royal Academy.
