André Campra

1660 – 1744 · French

Biography

André Campra was born on 4 December 1660 in Aix-en-Provence and died on 29 June 1744 in Versailles. He was a choirboy at his hometown's Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur and later served as choirmaster in Toulon, Arles and Toulouse before taking charge of the music at Notre-Dame de Paris in 1694. In 1700 he gave up that post to devote himself entirely to stage music – out of consideration for his clerical status, his early theatrical works were initially published under his brother's name. The opéra-ballet L'Europe galante (1697) brought his breakthrough; it was followed by tragédies en musique such as Tancrède (1702) and Idoménée (1712), and by Les Fêtes vénitiennes (1710), one of his greatest stage successes.
