Ambroise Thomas

1811 – 1896 · French

Biography

Ambroise Thomas was born on 5 August 1811 in Metz and entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1828, studying composition with Jean-François Le Sueur among others. He won the Prix de Rome in 1832. After early stage successes such as "Le songe d'une nuit d'été" (1850), he achieved international breakthrough with "Mignon" (1866) and "Hamlet" (1868). From 1856 he taught composition at the Conservatoire and became its director in 1871, a post he held until his death; in that role he pursued a conservative course against younger composers such as César Franck. Thomas died on 12 February 1896 in Paris.
