Biography
Alfred Bruneau (1857–1934) was a French composer and influential music critic. A close friend and artistic collaborator of Émile Zola, he brought literary naturalism to the operatic stage, setting many of Zola's subjects to music. Works such as Le Rêve (1891), L'Attaque du moulin (1893), and Messidor turned away from mythology to place contemporary social life at their centre. As a critic for Le Figaro and Le Matin, he championed a modern, socially engaged form of opera.
