Biography
Alexander Raskatov, born 1953 in Moscow, is one of the most significant Russian-French composers of our time. After studies at the Moscow Conservatory, he emigrated to France in the 1990s. His compositional language combines Russian traditions with contemporary avant-garde — choral allusions, microtonal structures, and satirical theatricality are characteristic. He gained international attention with the opera A Dog's Heart (2010, Amsterdam) after Bulgakov, a biting satire on the Soviet Union. In 2023 his opera Animal Farm after George Orwell premiered at Dutch National Opera — a political parable of frightening contemporary relevance. Raskatov lives in Paris today and is considered one of the most important voices of contemporary music.
