Vestige

Dani Rowe
Ballet · 2025

About the work

Vestige is a ballet by the Australian choreographer Dani Rowe, premiered in 2025 at the Opernhaus Zürich — her first work for Ballett Zürich and her debut as a choreographer in Europe. It is danced to Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in the orchestral version by Maurice Ravel. Rather than illustrating the individual pictures, Rowe takes inspiration from the moods of the music.

Plot

Vestige tells no self-contained story. Mussorgsky's sequence of pictures becomes episodes and memories of a life — not arranged chronologically but as loosely connected vignettes between intimate moments, folk-dance echoes, jumps and lifts. "Movements are memories", in Rowe's guiding phrase; the evening follows images and sensations rather than a linear narrative.

Cultural significance

Vestige marks Dani Rowe's first collaboration with Ballett Zürich and her European debut as a choreographer, after creating works for San Francisco Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and The Joffrey Ballet, among others, and becoming Artistic Director of Oregon Ballet Theatre. In the double bill Oiseaux Rebelles her abstract, image-driven piece opens the evening before Mats Ek's Carmen.
