About the work
Gerhart Hauptmann wrote this fairy-tale drama in the autumn of 1905, subtitling it "A Glassworks Fairy Tale." It premiered on 19 January 1906 at Berlin's Lessingtheater, with Ida Orloff as Pippa, Rudolf Rittner as the glassblower Huhn, and Oscar Sauer as the enigmatic Wann.
Plot
In a Silesian glassworks deep in winter, the fragile, beautiful Pippa is desired by very different men: the coarse glassblower Huhn, the young apprentice Michel Hellriegel, and the mysterious old Wann. A nocturnal dance with Huhn during a snowstorm ends fatally: Pippa shatters like the glass creature she embodies, and Michel is struck blind with shock.
Cultural significance
The premiere split the critics: Franz Mehring dismissed the play as "sheer nonsense," while others hailed it as major poetry. Only later interpretations read Pippa's fragility as an allegory of art itself, placing the work among Hauptmann's symbolist late plays.
