About the work
Timmy – Die Hope stirbt zuletzt is a documentary-performance work about the humpback whale known as Timmy or Hope that became the focus of intense public attention after stranding in 2026. The work received its world premiere at Hamburg's Ernst Deutsch Theater on 11 July 2026. Director Alexander Klessinger developed the production very rapidly in response to the events. It combines performance, concert, liturgical forms and documentary material.
Plot
The starting point is the real attempt to rescue a stranded humpback whale and the extraordinary media and social attention surrounding the event. The production incorporates original statements by politicians, scientists, activists and eyewitnesses. The animal becomes a projection surface for hope, community, political conflict and religious imagery. Christian motifs including the cross, liturgy and the Eucharist are deliberately incorporated into the theatrical form.
Cultural significance
The production is notable for the extremely short interval between a real-world event and its theatrical treatment. Rather than focusing only on the whale's fate, it investigates the social dynamics that emerged around it. Its use of Christian imagery generated significant controversy after the premiere and was followed by threats against members of the production, meaning that the work itself became entangled in the conflicts it had set out to examine.
