Sita

Gustav Holst
Opera · 2024

About the work

Sita is a three-act opera by Gustav Holst to his own libretto, based on the Indian epic Ramayana. Holst composed the work, which took roughly seven years, between 1899 and 1906 for a competition run by the publisher Ricordi, narrowly missing first prize — after which the score disappeared into the British Library for more than a hundred years. It finally received its staged premiere on 12 October 2024 at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, marking Holst's 150th birthday.

Plot

Sita, daughter of Mother Earth, is created by her as a companion for the divine avatar Rama. Rama and his brother Lakshman fight the demon king Ravana, who abducts Sita out of love and revenge. After Rama's victory, he doubts her fidelity; disappointed, Sita leaves him and returns to Mother Earth.

Cultural significance

The score had to be newly transcribed specifically for the premiere; musicologists regard Sita as Holst's most ambitious early work, marked by leitmotif technique and harmonic echoes of Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen". Its rediscovery was accompanied by an academic conference at Saarland University; critics particularly praised the dramatic cohesion of the later acts, noting longueurs in the first.
