About the work
She Loves Me is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and a book by Joe Masteroff, based on Miklós László's play "Parfumerie" (1937). It premiered on April 23, 1963, at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Broadway; a German-language stage version exists under the title "Sie liebt mich" ("She Loves Me").
Plot
In a 1930s Budapest parfumerie, shop clerks Amalia Balash and Georg Nowack cannot stand one another, unaware that they are each secretly corresponding with an anonymous pen pal they have fallen in love with – who turns out to be the other. Only after many mix-ups in the shop's daily routine do they discover whom they truly love.
Cultural significance
The original production was not a box-office success but has since become a cult favorite prized for one of the most sophisticated scores in classic Broadway musical theatre. Two revivals (1993, 2016) together received fourteen Tony nominations. László's play also inspired the films "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) and "You've Got Mail" (1998).
