About the work
Orbit is a world premiere by the Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis for Ballett Zürich, first performed on 17 January 2026 as part of the evening Timeframed — Foniadakis's first collaboration with the company. Eight dancers move to music by Bryce Dessner and Ludovico Einaudi, in shimmering costumes studded with Swarovski crystals by Anastasios Sofroniou.
Plot
Orbit tells no story but conjures a cosmic image of movement: like galactic bodies, the soloists circle through the dark space in brief pas de deux, solos and small groupings. Foniadakis's explosive, inventive movement language and the glittering costumes transport the audience into another, rarefied world.
Cultural significance
With his image-rich, energy-charged movement language, Andonis Foniadakis is regarded as one of the distinctive voices of contemporary European dance. Orbit, his first creation for Ballett Zürich, was enthusiastically received at its premiere in the evening Timeframed.
