About the work
Ophelias Tränen is a solo performance at Schauspiel Leipzig led artistically by Paula Winteler and Lina-Marieke Wegner and performed by Winteler. It premiered on 11 September 2024. The production takes Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet as its dramatic and cultural starting point while creating an independent contemporary work centred on her perspective.
Plot
Ophelia wonders whether she should cry, generally hides her tears from other people and begins secretly collecting them. From this surreal premise, the performance develops an exploration of sadness, tenderness, self-image and the cultural fascination with the silent, beautiful and dying Ophelia. Pop-cultural references to modern sad-girl icons coexist with canonical representations of Shakespeare's character. Crucially, Ophelia is no longer treated merely as a supporting figure in a male hero's story but is given the stage and interpretive authority herself.
Cultural significance
The production belongs to a contemporary feminist tradition of revisiting canonical female characters. It counters the long visual and theatrical tradition of Ophelia as passive, beautiful and dead with a speaking, contradictory and contemporary subject. Reviews specifically highlighted this shift away from a representation historically shaped overwhelmingly by male perspectives.
