About the work

Linie 1 is a musical revue from Berlin's GRIPS Theater. Volker Ludwig wrote the book and lyrics, while Birger Heymann composed the music together with the rock band No Ticket. The work received its world premiere at GRIPS Theater on 30 April 1986. Set largely on West Berlin's former U-Bahn Line 1, the musical combines an individual search narrative with a social panorama of the divided city.

Plot

A young woman from the provinces arrives in Berlin searching for a musician she wants to find again. Travelling on Line 1, she encounters a cross-section of West Berlin society. Underground trains and stations become a sequence of settings in which social differences, loneliness, hope, adaptation, prejudice and everyday urban life appear. The songs bind these encounters together into a revue about living and surviving in a large city.

Cultural significance

Linie 1 became the greatest success in the history of GRIPS Theater and one of the most internationally successful German-language musicals. It has been translated and performed in numerous countries over several decades. Its enduring cultural significance comes from combining a highly specific portrait of 1980s West Berlin with broadly recognisable themes of urban diversity, belonging and social survival.
