About the work
Leichter Gesang, presented in English by Deutsches Theater as Easy Singing, is a theatre text by Nele Stuhler developed through a collaborative research process involving performers from Deutsches Theater and the inclusive RambaZamba Theater. Directed by FX Mayr, it received its world premiere at Deutsches Theater Berlin on 18 September 2025. Its central concerns are speaking, understanding and not understanding.
Plot
Rather than presenting a conventional plot, the text investigates language itself. The performers explore what it means to understand something, which linguistic rules make communication easier or more difficult, and whether misunderstanding can itself become productive. Stuhler works with principles associated with Easy Language without simply reproducing them. The result is a theatrical language designed to be simultaneously simple and complex, continually dismantling and rearranging apparently familiar words.
Cultural significance
The work connects contemporary playwriting with inclusive theatre practice and makes linguistic accessibility itself an aesthetic subject. Leichter Gesang was invited to the Heidelberger Stückemarkt and the Dramatiker|innenfestival in Graz. Its particular significance lies in treating Easy Language not simply as a pedagogical instrument but as material for a poetic inquiry into comprehension, participation and the limits of language.
