Le domino noir is an opéra comique in three acts by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber to a libretto by Eugène Scribe, first performed on 2 December 1837 at the Paris Opéra-Comique.
Plot
On the night before she is to enter the convent, Angèle de Olivarès, niece of the Queen of Spain, secretly leaves once more, masked in a black domino, to attend a ball. There she meets her suitor Horace de Massarena again; locked out after midnight, she must navigate a turbulent night of mistaken identities before finally choosing marriage over the convent.
Cultural significance
With 1,207 performances at the Opéra-Comique by 1909, Le domino noir was one of Auber's most successful works and was translated into numerous languages and staged internationally.
