About the work
Le chalet is a one-act opéra comique by Adolphe Adam, with a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Mélesville after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's singspiel Jery und Bätely. It premiered on 25 September 1834 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris and was Adam's first major stage success.
Plot
In a Swiss mountain village, the overlooked Daniel loves the self-assured Bettly, who wants nothing to do with him; the villagers trick him with a forged letter into believing his feelings are returned. Bettly's brother Max, returning from military service, billets a troop of soldiers at her chalet to help Daniel, without Bettly at first recognising him; the ensuing chaos finally persuades Bettly to agree to marry.
Cultural significance
The same subject, after Goethe's Jery und Bätely, was set to music shortly afterwards by Gaetano Donizetti under the title Betly; Adam's version marked his 1834 breakthrough as an opera composer after years as a conductor and occasional composer.
