About the work

Jeeps is a comedy in three acts by Nora Abdel-Maksoud, a commissioned work of the Münchner Kammerspiele, where it premiered on 21 November 2021 directed by the author herself. In 2022 the production was invited to the Mülheimer Theatertage. With a razor-sharp eye, black humour and breakneck verbal wit, Abdel-Maksoud dissects the social debate about inheritance, justice and class.

Plot

The starting point is a fictional inheritance-law reform: the up to 400 billion euros bequeathed in Germany every year are no longer passed automatically to descendants but redistributed by lottery — and the body responsible is, of all places, the job centre. There four characters collide: two pig-headed caseworkers and two impoverished female applicants engage in a punch-packed verbal sparring match between unemployment and inheritance-lessness, bureaucratic logic and the "ovary lottery". The text leaps between flashbacks, dialogue and narrative-explanatory passages, pushing to the extreme the question of how claimed meritocratic fairness relates to actual social inequality.

Cultural significance

Jeeps is regarded as one of the most biting and funniest contributions to the distribution debate in contemporary German-language theatre. Nora Abdel-Maksoud, author and director in one, combines social questions of justice and classism with the pace and precision of boulevard comedy — establishing herself as one of the most original comedic voices of her generation.
