About the work
Il proscritto is a three-act opera by Saverio Mercadante to a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, who condensed the play Le proscrit by Frédéric Soulié and Timothée Dehay into three acts. It premiered at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples on 4 January 1842.
Plot
In Cromwellian Scotland, Malvina is married to the royalist Giorgio, believed dead, but is pressured into agreeing to marry Arturo, a Cromwell supporter. When Giorgio unexpectedly returns, a fatal love triangle unfolds, ending with Malvina's death by poison.
Cultural significance
Despite a strong cast, the premiere was unsuccessful — contemporary critics accused the music of leaning too heavily on German style — and the work was never staged again in Mercadante's lifetime. It returned to the stage only through Opera Rara's 2022 revival in London, whose recording won the 2023 International Opera Award.
