About the work

Happy End is a 1929 comedy with music by Kurt Weill (music) and Bertolt Brecht (song lyrics); the book was written by Elisabeth Hauptmann, originally published under the pseudonym Dorothy Lane. It premiered on 2 September 1929 at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin, with a cast including Carola Neher, Helene Weigel, Oskar Homolka, Peter Lorre and Theo Lingen.

Plot

In a Chicago-style gangster milieu, Salvation Army officer Lilian, known as Hallelujah Lil, clashes with racketeer boss Bill Cracker. Between heists, a nightclub and Salvation Army meetings, a love story unfolds that ironically reconciles the underworld and the Salvation Army by the end.

Cultural significance

Together with The Threepenny Opera and Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Happy End forms the core of Weill, Brecht and Hauptmann's collaboration at the end of the Weimar Republic. Despite failing at its premiere, the piece contains some of the best-known numbers in the Weill-Brecht repertoire, including the Bilbao Song and Surabaya Johnny, and saw international rediscoveries from the 1970s onward.
