About the work
Frühere Verhältnisse (Former Circumstances) is a one-act farce with songs that Johann Nestroy based on motifs from Emilie Pohl's Berlin play Ein melancholischer Hausknecht oder Alte Bekanntschaften (premiered 30 July 1861). Already largely retired from active theatre work, Nestroy premiered the piece on 7 January 1862 at the Theater am Franz-Josefs-Kai, with music by Anton M. Storch.
Plot
Timber merchant Scheitermann, now wealthy, hides his humble past as a former servant from his upper-class wife Josephine. When former fellow servants turn up looking for work, they threaten to expose his secret, and one of them tries to blackmail him over it. The confusion resolves once it turns out that Josephine's own genteel past is not quite what it seems either.
Cultural significance
The play is one of Nestroy's last works and remains among his most frequently performed farces. Recent scholarship reads it not merely as a harmless mix-up comedy but as a pointed satire on social climbing and the value placed on respectable appearances in the liberal bourgeoisie.
