Dario Fo
Theatre · 1971

About the work

Einer für alle, alle für einen! Verzeihung, wer ist hier eigentlich der Boss? (original title "Tutti uniti! Tutti insieme! Ma scusa, quello non è il padrone?") is a historical play by Dario Fo, premiered on 27 March 1971 at the Casa del Popolo in Varese.

Plot

In scenes spanning 1911 to the early 1920s, Fo traces the rise of the Italian labour movement, its split over the First World War, and the rise of fascism. At its centre is Antonia, who develops from an apolitical seamstress into a consciously acting revolutionary, while a union representative mediates between factory owners and striking women workers occupying the plant.

Cultural significance

The play belongs to Fo's militant historical revues of the early 1970s; he supplemented the printed text with a chronicle of the Italian labour movement from the founding of the PSI in 1892 to the founding of the Communist Party of Italy in 1921, together with commentary by the historian Massimo Salvatori.
