About the work
Edmea is an opera in three acts by Alfredo Catalani, based on a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni originally written for another composer. It was premiered on 27 February 1886 at La Scala in Milan, conducted by Franco Faccio.
Plot
Set in 17th-century Bohemia, the story follows Edmea, who is forced into marriage by her adoptive father, a count, although she loves Oberto, the son of her aristocratic guardian. The conflict between forced marriage and true love drives Edmea to a mad scene before the story still turns out well.
Cultural significance
The libretto is based on the drama "Les Danicheff" by Alexandre Dumas fils. Following its success in Milan, Catalani presented a revised version in Turin in November 1886, conducted by the young Arturo Toscanini.
