"The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" is a play by Edward Albee. It premiered on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on March 10, 2002, directed by David Esbjornson and starring Bill Pullman and Mercedes Ruehl.
Plot
Successful architect Martin confesses to his best friend Ross that he is having a love affair with a goat named Sylvia. When Ross reveals the secret to Martin's wife Stevie, the family's respectable facade collapses; the play ends with Stevie killing the animal.
Cultural significance
The play won the 2002 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Play and was a finalist for the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Albee used the taboo subject to probe the limits of love and social tolerance.
