About the work

Edmund Eysler composed the three-act operetta "Die gold'ne Meisterin" to a libretto by Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald. It premiered on 13 September 1927 at the Theater an der Wien.

Plot

At a masked ball, the widowed goldsmith master Margarete is courted by her own journeyman Christian, who calls her "princess" without her knowing who he really is. When the deception comes out the two fall out, until Christian finally wins her over by exposing a fraudulent count.

Cultural significance

The operetta brought Eysler what he considered the greatest success of his career, reaching 220 performances at the Theater an der Wien; songs such as "Du liebe gold'ne Meisterin" and "So tanzt man nur in Wien" remained popular. The publisher Felix Bloch Erben still licenses the work for performance today.
