About the work
Comédie-lyrique in three acts by André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry to a libretto by Jean-Baptiste Lourdet de Santerre, based on Charles-Simon Favart's "Ninette à la cour" (1755). It premiered on 1 January 1782 at the Académie Royale de Musique (Paris Opera), with choreography by Maximilien Gardel.
Plot
Two couples, Julien and Colinette and Bastien and Justine, plan a joint wedding. Trials of jealousy and misunderstandings threaten the planned double wedding before all doubts are finally resolved.
Cultural significance
The work was an immediate success, reaching around 115 performances in Paris by 1816, at times sharing the repertoire with Gluck's "Iphigénie en Aulide". It later fell into obscurity.
