About the work
Bat Out of Hell is a rock musical with music, lyrics and book by Jim Steinman, based on the album of the same name by Meat Loaf and woven together with motifs from J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan. It premiered on 17 February 2017 at the Manchester Opera House, directed by Jay Scheib.
Plot
In the post-apocalyptic city of Obsidian, once Manhattan, the eternally young "Lost" and their leader Strat rebel against the tyrannical ruler Falco; Strat falls in love with Falco's daughter Raven, sharpening the conflict between the generations.
Cultural significance
Steinman originally developed the material as a rock-musical version of Peter Pan titled Neverland, which foundered over rights disputes with the Barrie estate, and later fused the idea with his Bat Out of Hell songs. After Manchester, productions followed in London and Toronto, and from November 2018 in Oberhausen, the work's German-language premiere.
