The Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Zagrebu (HNK, Croatian National Theatre) is Croatia's oldest and most important theatre institution, uniting opera, ballet and drama under one roof. The landmark bright-yellow neo-Baroque building stands at the centre of Republic of Croatia Square and opened in 1895 to designs by the Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer. Ivan Meštrović's fountain "The Well of Life" (Zdenac života) stands in front of the main entrance. The house presents both domestic and international repertoire, from classical to modern.
