The Edinburgh Playhouse on Greenside Place is Scotland's largest theatre, with around 3,000 seats. Designed by John Fairweather and opened in 1929 as a super-cinema modelled on New York picture palaces, it was converted into a live venue in 1980. Today it is a Category A listed building and hosts major touring musicals, alongside concerts, ballet and Edinburgh International Festival performances.
