Zoltán Kodály

1882 – 1967 · Hungarian

Biography

Zoltán Kodály was born on 16 December 1882 in Kecskemét and from 1900 studied comparative literature in Budapest alongside composition and pedagogy at the Academy of Music. Together with his friend Béla Bartók he began systematically touring Hungarian and neighbouring villages from the mid-1900s to collect and scientifically document folk songs, publishing their first joint collection in 1906. From 1907 he taught music theory and later composition at the Budapest Academy of Music, and his Kodály method has shaped music education worldwide. His compositions, including the Singspiel “Háry János” (1926), fuse Hungarian folk song with art-music technique. Kodály died in Budapest on 6 March 1967.
