Biography

Zdeněk Fibich was born in 1850 in Všebořice, Bohemia, and studied music in Prague, at the Leipzig Conservatory, in Paris and in Mannheim. He worked as a choral director and composer in Prague, writing operas, melodramas, and orchestral and piano works, including the 376-piece piano cycle "Moods, Impressions, and Reminiscences." With his opera "Bouře" (1895), based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest," and his later, more successful opera "Šárka," he ranked among the most important Czech opera composers of his time.
