Biography

Yael Ronen was born in Jerusalem in 1976 and studied scenic writing and acting at Studio HB in New York, followed by three years of directing studies at the Seminar Hakibbutzim College of Education in Tel Aviv. Since 2002 she has written and directed her own plays, developed through a collective process with the ensemble that often draws on the performers' own biographies, including “Plonter” (2005) and “Third Generation” (2008). From 2013/14 to 2023 she was a resident director at Berlin's Maxim Gorki Theatre, where productions including “Common Ground” (2014), “The Situation” (2015) and the music-theatre piece “Slippery Slope” (2021), created with Shlomi Shaban, were staged; since 2024 she has worked freelance. Her work has been recognised with the Nestroy Theatre Prize (2013, 2016) and the Europe Theatre Prize (2017), among others.
