Biography

Wolfgang Rihm was born on 13 March 1952 in Karlsruhe and died there on 27 July 2024. He studied with, among others, Eugen Werner Velte, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Wolfgang Fortner and Klaus Huber, and had already composed substantial works as a student. From 1985 he taught composition as a professor at the Karlsruhe University of Music, where he also headed the Institute for New Music; his students included Jörg Widmann and Rebecca Saunders. Rihm's output comprises well over 500 works in every genre, from chamber music and orchestral works to music-theatre pieces such as "Jakob Lenz", "Die Hamletmaschine" and "Die Eroberung von Mexico". His body of work earned him, among other honours, the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (2003) and the City of Hamburg's Bach Prize (1999).
