Biography

Wojdan Tschernodrinski was born on 15 January 1875 in the village of Selci near Struga, then part of the Ottoman Empire, and died in January 1951 in Sofia. After schooling in Ohrid and Thessaloniki he settled in Sofia in 1890, working as a teacher for the Bulgarian Exarchate and teaching himself playwriting. In 1900 he wrote his best-known play, the tragedy "Macedonian Blood Wedding", which established him as a dramatist. In 1901 he founded the touring theatre company "Skrab i uteha" (Sorrow and Solace), out of which a permanent ensemble grew in 1902; he is regarded as a founding figure of professional Macedonian theatre and wrote around sixteen plays in all.
