Biography

Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky was born on 19 July 1893 in Baghdati, Georgia; after his father's death the family moved to Moscow in 1906. Even as a teenager he was active in the Social Democratic Labour Party and was jailed several times in 1908/09, where he wrote his first poems. From 1911 he studied at the Moscow art school, joined the Futurist group Hylaea, and became known through the 1912 manifesto "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste". With the play "Vladimir Mayakovsky: A Tragedy" (1913) and the poem "A Cloud in Trousers" (1914/15) he established himself as a leading voice of the Russian avant-garde. After the October Revolution he put his art in the service of Soviet power, notably with the play "Mysterium buffo" (1918) and thousands of agitprop posters. Under mounting ideological pressure, Mayakovsky took his own life in Moscow on 14 April 1930.
