Biography
William Wycherley was born around 1640 near Shrewsbury and was sent to France as a young man for his education, where he briefly converted to Catholicism. After returning to England, he studied briefly at Queen's College, Oxford, before turning to the Inner Temple in London and soon to the theatre. His first comedy, "Love in a Wood" (1671), won him favor at court and admission to the circle around King Charles II. His major works, "The Country Wife" (1675) and "The Plain Dealer" (1676), are considered the sharpest and wittiest comedies of manners of the English Restoration. A secretive, financially ruinous marriage later left him in debt and briefly imprisoned; he died in London in 1715.
