Biography

William Ward Murta comes from Fort Smith, Arkansas, and grew up in Oklahoma. Since 1984 he has been a conductor at Theater Bielefeld, where he has been musical director mainly of musicals, among them “Cabaret”, “Evita”, “Chicago”, “La Cage aux Folles”, “Chess” and “Sunset Boulevard”; he also works as an arranger for musical productions and gala concerts. After “M… wie Marilyn” (1987) and “Starry Messenger” (2004), a musical about Galileo Galilei, “The Birds of Alfred Hitchcock” became his third original musical, for which he wrote the music, book and lyrics; it premiered at Theater Bielefeld in September 2010. It was followed there in 2017 by “Das Molekül”, about the race to decipher the structure of DNA, which was nominated in five categories for the Deutscher Musical Theater Preis. He conducted the Bielefeld Philharmonic himself at the premieres of “The Birds of Alfred Hitchcock” and “Das Molekül”.
