Biography
Wilhelm Kienzl was born on 17 January 1857 in Waizenkirchen, Upper Austria, and grew up in Graz from the age of three. There he founded the Graz Richard Wagner Society in 1873 before studying composition in Vienna, Prague, Leipzig and Munich. From 1897 to 1917 he directed the Styrian Music Society in Graz and worked as a music critic. His opera "Der Evangelimann", premiered in Berlin in 1895, became his greatest and most internationally successful work. From 1918 Kienzl lived in Vienna, where he composed the national anthem of the First Austrian Republic in 1919; he died there on 3 October 1941.
