Biography
Wang Shifu was born around 1250 in Dadu, present-day Beijing, into a family that had once served in Genghis Khan's Mongol army. He began his career as a district official and rose to become an investigating censor in Shanxi province before giving up government service to devote himself to poetry and theatre. Only three of the fourteen plays attributed to him survive; the most important, "The Story of the Western Wing", is considered one of the major northern Chinese dramas of the Yuan period and was among the first of its kind to give singing parts to several characters rather than just one. He died around 1337 in Dadu.
