Biography
Walter Hasenclever was born in Aachen in 1890, the son of a physician. He studied law in Oxford, Lausanne and Leipzig, where he turned increasingly to literature, and became known through the Expressionist drama Der Sohn (1914/1916). Antigone followed in 1917, another widely noted play for which he received the Kleist Prize; during the 1920s he collaborated with figures including Kurt Tucholsky and also wrote comedies. After the Nazis banned his works, he fled to France in 1933, was stripped of his citizenship in 1938 and interned as an 'enemy alien'; on 21 June 1940 he took his own life at the Les Milles camp near Aix-en-Provence to avoid being handed over to the Nazis.
