Biography
Władysław Żeleński was born on 6 July 1837 in Grodkowice near Kraków and began music lessons as a child. He studied piano and composition in Kraków, then turned to philosophy and earned a doctorate from the University of Prague in 1862, where he also studied organ and counterpoint. From 1866 to 1870 he continued his composition studies in Paris. From 1871 he worked in Warsaw before returning to Kraków in 1881 as professor of music theory and composition, where he founded the conservatory of the Kraków Music Society and directed it until his death. Besides numerous songs, orchestral and chamber works, he wrote four operas, including Konrad Wallenrod and Goplana, and is regarded as one of the most influential Polish composers of the fin de siècle. He died on 23 January 1921 in Kraków.
