Biography
Vladimir Sorokin was born on 7 August 1955 in Bykovo near Moscow and originally trained as an engineer at the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. During the 1970s and 1980s he belonged to Moscow's unofficial art and literary scene and is regarded as one of the leading figures of Moscow Conceptualism. His first book appeared in exile in Paris in 1985, while official publication in the Soviet Union only became possible in 1989. Sorokin's writing relies on stylistic parody and grotesque, often unsettling imagery to comment on social and political conditions, as in the novella "The Blizzard" (2010). His work has been honoured with the Russian Booker Prize (2001) and the Gregor von Rezzori Prize (2015), and in 2005 he was made a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. An outspoken critic of the Russian government, he has lived in exile in Berlin since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
