Biography

Vivan Bhatti was born in Bielefeld in 1975 and studied guitar at the Hochschule für Musik München and the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Düsseldorf. As a freelance composer, electric and classical guitarist and theatre musician, he works across classical music, rock, hip-hop and contemporary music. With his brother Ketan Bhatti he forms a composing and production team that has written incidental music since 2003, above all for productions directed by Nuran David Calis at theatres such as the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Maxim Gorki Theater, Schauspiel Köln and the Volkstheater Wien; the brothers also scored Calis’s television films “Frühlings Erwachen” (2009) and “Woyzeck” (2013). For the breakdance company Flying Steps they created works including “Flying Bach”, which received a special Echo Klassik award in 2010, and “Flying Pictures at an Exhibition” (2019). Their joint music theatre works include “Discount Diaspora” (2011) to a libretto by Feridun Zaimoglu and Günter Senkel and “Das schwarze Wasser” (2016) after Roland Schimmelpfennig, both for the Neuköllner Oper, the opera “Berlin Alexanderplatz” after Döblin, premiered at Theater Bielefeld in 2022, and “Der rote Wal” to a libretto by Markus Winter, premiered at the Staatsoper Stuttgart in 2025.
