Virginia Woolf

Biography

Virginia Woolf was born on 25 January 1882 in London and died on 28 March 1941 near Rodmell, Sussex. After her father's death in 1904 she moved with her siblings to Bloomsbury and became part of the circle of artists and intellectuals that took its name from the district. In 1912 she married Leonard Woolf, with whom she founded the Hogarth Press in 1917. With novels such as Mrs Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927) she shaped the stream-of-consciousness narrative technique; her essay A Room of One's Own (1929) became a key text of the women's movement. In 1935 she staged Freshwater, her only work for the theatre.
