Biography
Viktor Ullmann was born on 1 January 1898 in Teschen and showed musical talent already at his Vienna gymnasium; he was admitted to Arnold Schönberg's composition class and later worked as a composer and conductor at the New German Theatre in Prague. On 8 September 1942 he was deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where he helped organise musical life, wrote music criticism, and composed numerous works despite the conditions of imprisonment, including three piano sonatas and his third string quartet. It was there, in 1943/44, that he also created his best-known composition, the opera 'Der Kaiser von Atlantis' to a libretto by Petr Kien, whose planned performance in the camp never took place. In October 1944 Ullmann was deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp, where he was murdered on 18 October 1944.
