Biography
Victor Ernst Nessler was born on 28 January 1841 in Baldenheim near Schlettstadt in Alsace, the son of a Protestant clergyman, and initially began studying theology. The success of his first stage work, 'Fleurette', in Strasbourg persuaded him to abandon his studies and devote himself entirely to music, studying among others with Ludwig Liebe. From 1870 to 1879 he worked as chorus master and conductor at the Leipzig City Theatre. With the operas 'Der Rattenfänger von Hameln' (1879) and above all 'Der Trompeter von Säkkingen' (1884) he achieved overnight successes that made him famous throughout the German-speaking world; both Hamelin and Säckingen made him an honorary citizen in gratitude. Nessler died in Strasbourg on 28 May 1890.
