Biography

Valerie Solanas was born on 9 April 1936 in Ventnor City, New Jersey, and studied psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park, graduating in 1958 before beginning graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. By the late 1960s she was living in New York, where she wrote the play „Up Your Ass“ (1965) and, in 1967, self-published the radical feminist „SCUM Manifesto“, which called for abolishing the money system, governments and the male sex. On 3 June 1968 she shot the artist Andy Warhol and the art critic Mario Amaya at Warhol's studio, The Factory; she turned herself in to police the same day and was later convicted of assault. After her release in 1971 she lived largely withdrawn, in changing circumstances across the United States, and died on 25 April 1988 in San Francisco. Since the 1970s, her SCUM Manifesto has been widely read as an early document of the radical second-wave feminist movement.
