Biography

Valentino Fioravanti was born on 11 September 1764 in Rome. He studied singing with a singer from St Peter's and counterpoint with Giuseppe Jannacconi in Rome, before studying with Nicola Sala in Naples from 1779 to 1781. His opera buffa Gl'inganni fortunati (Naples, 1788) marked his breakthrough as a stage composer, and his greatest success came in 1799 with Le cantatrici villane. From around 1800 he directed the theatre in Lisbon, moved to Paris in 1807, and later worked again in Naples. In 1816 he was appointed maestro di cappella of the Cappella Giulia at St Peter's Basilica in Rome, a post in which he thereafter composed mainly sacred music. He died on 16 June 1837 in Capua.
