Biography
Ulf Schmidt was born in Braunschweig in 1966, studied theatre studies, German literature and philosophy in Munich, Paris and Frankfurt am Main, and earned his doctorate in 2002 under Hans-Thies Lehmann with a thesis on Plato. Before that he had worked for several years as a paramedic; afterwards he was a copywriter and later creative director at a digital agency before becoming a freelance author and dramaturge in 2012. He gained nationwide attention that same year when he auctioned the premiere rights to “Schuld und Schein. Ein Geldstück” on eBay; the Metropoltheater Munich staged the play in 2013 and kept it in its repertoire for years. He won the Heidelberg Stückemarkt author's prize in 2014 for “Der Marienthaler Dachs”, and with the director Volker Lösch he developed projects such as “Das Prinzip Jago” (Schauspiel Essen, 2016) and “Bonnopoly” (Bonn, 2017). For the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen he wrote libretti, including the rock opera “Krabat” (2022); with the 2025/26 season he became chief dramaturge and chief author at the Saarländisches Staatstheater.
